Surprised? Hamilton tops cost of living list

Bermuda’s capital tops a list of 495 cities around the world for expense, according to an online database of reported consumer prices.

Based on details obtained from crowdsourcing, the site Numbeo is an imperfect source — but a popular indicator nonetheless.

Cost of living indexes are all relative to New York City, which the site keeps set at 100 per cent. Against that benchmark, Hamilton scores an overall consumer price index of 152.75 — top of the list. Hamilton’s groceries index is especially steep, clocking 174. Rent is not far above New York prices, at 108.27, bringing the consumer price index plus rent down to 130.09.

The restaurant price index is 131.83.

Hamilton is well ahead of city number two: Geneva, Switzerland, which scored a consumer price index of 136.86. Swiss cities predominated in the top ten on the cost of living rankings. London and San Francisco edged past New York at 100.8 and 100.05 respectively. Dublin, Ireland scored 83.63, while Toronto, Canada took 76.37, and Kingston, Jamaica came in at 65.29.

Lagos, Nigeria came in with a consumer price index of 56.22, while Cape Town in South Africa was ranked 41.42. Cities in India and Pakistan trailed at the bottom of the indices.
