James Finnigan’s impressive run at the Bermuda Clay Court Championships finally came to an end yesterday.

The unseeded youngster was beaten by top seed Jenson Bascome 6-2, 7-6 in the semi-finals at Coral Beach & Tennis Club.

Finnigan, who upset third seed Javon Whitter in the previous round, put in a spirited performance, forcing Bascome into a tie-breaker in the second set.

Bascome’s greater experience proved the difference, however, and he will now face Gavin Manders in a battle of the Island’s top two players in the men’s final tomorrow morning.

Manders had an equally tough route to the final, beating Neal Towlson, the Coral Beach professional, 6-4, 6-4.

In other matches, Erika Bove hammered Imani Brooks 6-0, 6-0, in a match which seems likely to set up a decisive final round-robin encounter tomorrow with Ashley Brooks, who is undefeated. Jacklyn Lambert is also still in the hunt after beating Kim Burns 6-2, 6-1.

There is another full round of matches today, with Finnigan and Dean Mello teaming up in the men’s doubles to take on Bascome and Towlson, while Manders and Jovan Whitter will face off against Romar Douglas and Nicholas Thuell.

In the deciding match of the women’s doubles, Bove and Jill Finnigan take on Brookes and Phillips.

And in one of the most popular events in the tournament, the mixed century doubles, in which the players’ combined ages must exceed 100 years, David Benevides and Janet Burke Green take on James Keyes and Lee Petty for the right to meet Michael and Kelly Way in the final tomorrow.

The men’s and women’s winners will each walk away with $2,000 courtesy of sponsor Moet & Chandon. The runners-up will each receive $500.
