‘Shaken’ cashier recovering after robbery

Crime scene: at the Crawl Hill gas station

A gas station cashier who was injured by a fleeing robber is “shaken up but OK”, according to her boss.

Joseph Marable, co-owner of Esso Tigermarket on Crawl Hill, said the female employee went to the emergency room at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital to have her arm checked after the robbery on Monday evening. “It’s very unfortunate,” he told The Royal Gazette. “I’m thankful no one got seriously injured. I always instruct my staff, if someone is robbing the place, to hand over the money.”

Police said the robber entered a booth outside the Tigermarket on the corner of Radnor Road and North Shore Road in Hamilton Parish at about 8pm and demanded cash from the employee.

A police spokesman said she complied but then “tried to stop him leaving” on his motorcycle, resulting in her being “run over”.

Mr Marable said: “She didn’t get literally run over. She was standing when the bike took off and he kind of kicked her and she fell back.

“A lot of it was the adrenalin. She kind of came around out of the kiosk. I guess she was trying to see a licence plate. That’s when the guy took off.”

He said the man initially pulled into the station forecourt on his bike and asked the cashier, who is in her late twenties, for a dollar’s worth of gas, which she pumped for him.

Mr Marable said the suspect gave her $2 in payment, turned the engine of his bike back on and then followed her inside the kiosk as she went to get his change.

“As soon as she opened it [the till], he grabs money and takes off. It wasn’t that much,” he said. “I have spoken with her. She’s shaken up but she’s OK. There was no weapon involved at all.”

Mr Marable said police had retrieved closed-circuit television footage and he had “all the faith” that they would catch the culprit.

Officers are still appealing for witnesses to the robbery, particularly anyone who saw a male lurking in the area of Radnor Road and North Shore Road between 7.30pm and 8pm on Monday.

A Bermuda Police Service spokesman said: “Police would like to speak with anyone who may have any knowledge of this incident.

“No matter how insignificant your information may seem to you, we would like for you to make contact with the Criminal Investigation Department on 295-0011 or you can call the confidential Crime Stoppers [hotline] on 800-8477.

“Police are asking the public as well as business proprietors and workers alike to be mindful of any suspicious persons you may see lurking around your business establishment.

“Do not hesitate to report all suspicious behaviour to the police. It is always better to be safe than sorry.”
