Anti-violence campaigners took their message to the Berkeley Institute.

Youthvision focused on how to address violence and antisocial behaviour among young people at a special assembly for S3 students.

Keynote presenter was former Progressive Labour Party leader Marc Bean, with more speeches from S3 teacher Oladapo Frederick and campaigners Desmond Crockwell, Antonio Belvedere and Patrick Bean.

Mr Bean told young people they need to ignore the “loud voice” that often tempts them towards potential danger and listen to the more sensible “quiet voice”.

He said: “These voices do not and cannot speak at the same time and they speak to different volumes and tenor, with one very loud and demanding, while the other is quiet but no less resolute.

“The loud voice will suggest you go left and arrive quicker but the route is perilous, while the other a perhaps longer but safer, sustainable way forward. Which voice we heed it is for each of you and us to choose.

“Do not be mistaken, there are systems out there that are designed to confuse you and keep you in a state of confusion and control … but if you can control these two ‘minds’ you yourself have the power to discern and overcome.”

Mr Crockwell spoke about his own experiences of being raised under the influence of a crack and heroin addicted mother and absent father, and losing a close relative to gang violence.
