Get ready for Statistics Day number one

By Elizabeth Roberts

Number-crunchers from the Department of Statistics are set for a rare moment in the national spotlight when Premier Ewart Brown hosts the first ever National Statistics Day tomorrow.

The theme of the event is the vital role those facts and figures play in the management and development of the Island's future. Chief Statistician Valerie Robinson-James hopes the public will be better informed about the issue afterwards.

"Statisticians are key players in gathering and formulating economic and social development information. They frame the demographic profiles in our society and produce the statistics that become the eyes of policy makers and the heart of the development process," she said.

"The Department of Statistics provides a wealth of information about Bermuda; who we are, where we live and what we do."

She also stressed that her department needs co-operation from business and communities in order to produce the most accurate and reliable data.

Tomorrow's events will take place at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute from 9.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. Dr. Brown will officially open the day and that will be followed by speeches from people helped in their work by the department.

There will also be presentations for local businesses and high school students.
