Man with cannabis plant in house is fined $1,500

By Owain Johnston-Barnes

A 38-year-old Warwick man was fined after Police found a cannabis plant in his living room.

Johnny Burgess, of Hillview Road, pleaded guilty to cultivating a cannabis plant, when he appeared at Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Crown counsel Cindy Clarke told the court that officers went to Burgess' home on August 12 with a warrant to search the premises.

The officers noticed a large plant in a plastic pot in the living room. When asked what the plant was, Burgess told them: "You know what it is. It's a cannabis plant."

The plant was later measured and found to be 7.69 grams.

Burgess pleaded guilty to the offence, but told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that he had learnt a valuable lesson, and that he would never consider growing another cannabis plant.

Mr. Warner fined Burgess $1,500 for cultivating the plant.
