Breaking News: Thousands turn out to welcome the Queen
It was not the traditional carpet — but it was still a fitting welcome for the Queen when she arrived in Bermuda this afternoon.
Instead of red, the carpet that welcomed the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh to the Island was a pink.
As she stepped off the plane, she was greeted by the Governor Sir Richard Gozney, his wife Lady Gozney, the Premier Ewart Brown and his wife Wanda Henton Brown.
After arriving at L.F. Wade International Airport, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh went to St. George’s where they received the Royal salute, inspected the Regiment Guard of Honour and met dignitaries.
The people of St. George’s gave a right royal welcome to the Queen and Prince Philip as thousands of people turned out to get a glimpse of the Royal couple.
Children and adults alike stood waving flags and cheering for the Queen as she stepped out of her Range Rover.
During a walk to Ordnance Island, the Queen also greeted members of the public, including Cub Scouts, Brownies, Guides, Sea Cadets and schoolchildren.
Conchita Ming, Chairman of the Bermuda 2009 Steering Committee, said: “I am thrilled. I think this is absolutely thrilling to have Her Majesty come. We had sent an invitation through Government House and we weren’t sure and we kept hoping. Look at the crowd here today. It’s an honour having Her Majesty here for the celebrations.”
Following their visit to St. George’s, the Royal couple were due to leave for Government House.
