Today's Royal visit schedule

By Chris Spencer

Today the Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh begin the second day of their visit to Bermuda.

At 10 a.m. Her Majesty and Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip will arrive at the Cabinet Office to present The Duke of Edinburgh Awards at a private ceremony.

Directly after the presentation, at 10.20 a.m. the Royal couple will head to the Cathedral where they will be greeted by the Bishop of Bermuda, the Rt. Rev. Patrick White.

At the Cathedral the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will attend a 30-minute thanksgiving service to celebrate Bermuda's 400th anniversary.

Afterwards, the Royal couple will board a ferry from Albouy's Point headed for Dockyard.

Upon their arrival at Dockyard, the Royal couple will meet MPs, youth organisations and schoolchildren before separating briefly, when the Duke of Edinburgh will visit the Spirit of Bermuda before rejoining the Queen for a tour of the Clocktower Mall led by WedCo Chairman, Walter Lister.

At the end of the tour, The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will proceed upstairs to the Great Eastern Warehouse where children from Sandys Middle School will perform historical re-enactments.

They will also meet Dockyard apprentices from 1950 and view a cedar-carving demonstration by former Premier, David Saul.

The Royal party will then head for the Maritime Museum, viewing a special Drum-line presentation and greeting the public along the way.

The Queen and Prince Philip will then attend a special two-hour lunch at the Maritime Museum, hosted by Museum Director, Dr. Edward Harris.

Following the lunch, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will be escorted by Dr. Harris to the Mural Room for the official unveiling of artist, Graham Foster's mural depicting Bermuda's 400 years of history.

The Royal motorcade will leave Dockyard at 2.20 p.m. for Government House via Middle Road.

Along the way the motorcade will pass by several west-end schools before entering Hamilton via Trimingham Hill and passing by most of the centrally located schools.

At 8 p.m. the Queen and Prince Philip will attend a dinner at Tucker's Point club hosted by the Bermuda Government.

The evening will include a gift presentation by the Premier, as well as a welcome speech and loyal toast before Her Majesty makes a toast in honour of Bermuda.

Road closures

As the Royal party moves about the Island today, road closures and diversions will take place to accommodate them in their travels. Starting at 10 a.m. as the Queen and Prince Philip arrive at the Cabinet Office to present the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, before attending a service at the Cathedral and then board a ferry to Dockyard, the following roads will be closed in Hamilton:

■ Church Street between Parliament and Queen Street

■ Queen Street between Church and Front Street

■ Front Street between Queen Street and Bermudiana Road

■ Point Pleasant Road (Albouy's Point)

The Royal party will arrive in Dockyard at 11.40 a.m. and to ease their transition into the Clocktower building, Pender Road, the Clocktower Parade and other select areas of Dockyard will be closed as of 12 noon.

All roads will be reopened once the Royal party has passed.
