Serial drunk driver gets a two-year road ban

By Elizabeth Roberts

A drunk driver who was caught twice in the space of six months has been banned for two years and fined $2,000.

Glenmore Barrett, 54, ended up in hospital last July 31after crashing his Toyota Corolla on Valley Road, near the junction with Harbour Road in Paget. Police found the car straddling the road between two walls, and Barrett on a stretcher being treated by EMTs.

According to prosecutor Nicole Smith, he smelled of alcohol and was incoherent. He admitted he was the driver. Asked if he'd been drinking, Barrett, a chef from Jamaica, replied: "Well of course."

The next time he was caught, on January 7, it was because Police were notified that someone was operating a vehicle while impaired on Harbour Road, in Paget.

Ms Smith explained they found Barrett's Toyota facing west with the passenger side tyres in someone's drive and the driver's side tyres on the road.

The vehicle was on an embankment, leaning at a 45 degree angle.

Again, Ms Smith said Barrett smelled of alcohol and needed to hold onto a wall to maintain his balance. Again, he admitted he'd been drinking.

Barrett pleaded guilty to two charges of driving while impaired when he appeared at Magistrates' Court. Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner handed him a $2,000 fine, 20 demerit points and a two-year ban.

Five years ago, Barrett was involved in a collision with a motorcycle again on Harbour Road in Paget when he was more than three-and-a-half times over the drink drive limit. He was fined and banned on that occasion too.
