Sins and sensibility
You know that kids say the darndest things, right?
Yesterday I discovered the age-old saying had some cause and relevance too.
My wife and I were in the car with our three kids when my 12-year-old son asked, "Dad, it's a sin to commit suicide isn't it?"
"Yes, I replied. God said in His commandments that we shalt not kill. So killing yourself is a sin." -

All this formality gives people a bad name
The other day I wrote an e-mail to the Editor of an in-flight magazine asking her if she wanted any content from Bermuda — seeing they fly here and all.
She showed interest, but her response made me ponder a completely different subject altogether. -
Sep 12, 2012 12:01 amEnough is enough. Say no to the ‘criminal’ 17%
Let me ask you this.
Has the concept of adding a little extra onto the bill for services well done, let’s call them tips or gratuities, gone too far?
I ask because while down in Australia last week I noticed no one gives tips. Now, the argument will be that this is because the minimum wage is $16 per hour down there and that serving personnel earn enough via the traditional route. -

Why wont Wi-Fi fly at the airport?
Could there ever be a better mix of bitter and sweet than what I experienced last week?
I received the call I've been waiting for. Well one of them.
Adam Steinman of Warner Bros invited me to LA to talk about Songopoly going forward. No promises...
I thought...hmm, if I am in LA it's really only one flight to Australia, albeit a long one, so I shall take the family on vacation. -

Silly conspiracies and the nutcases who invent them
Have you ever noticed, set against the glorious blue backdrop of a lovely Bermuda sky, high-flying jets with long trails of white smoke behind them?
Why are they even over our skies, and who is sending them? Certainly its not the Bermuda Government.
Anyway, I learned something about them last week when I was in Canada.
Brace yourselves ... its scary.
Now, to be accurate, what I learned is a theory, a conspiracy theory actually. -

Adams is a knockout, Island’s women can be too
There are certain things in life that simply, for whatever reason, don’t sound like they should be good bedfellows.
Honesty and used car salesmen come to mind.
Obesity and good health is another, as is ketchup and ice cream, the Hatfields and McCoys, weightlifting and daintiness, oh and the biggest one, Simon Cowell and pleasantries. -

Playing for laughs at the Games
Several funny things coming out of the London Olympics that haven't been reported are going to be reported here.
For instance, did you hear about the three young men who wanted to get into the opening ceremony but didn't have tickets? -

The hypocrisy of Crown and Anchor
Cup Match is many things to many people, I for one, love the game of cricket itself and still stand by my comments of two months back that Cup Match should be two One Day Matches with the combined scores added together to achieve a result.

Head for the threads, the home of pseudo heroes and villains
The advent of social media platforms has allowed people of any race, gender, size or religious conviction to have a voice. You know, to express themselves, to join comment threads and lash out etc.
And in Bermuda it is no different.
Media opportunities to get things off your chest are everywhere. -

Sorry Ric, your grave theory is just cobblers
Have you ever stood on the shoreline of the mainland here and looked across to a small island several hundred metres off shore? And while looking, wondered how many people, if any, had ever walked on it, or, who knows, pondered what it would be like to walk on it yourself?
I have, and do - mainly because I like to take long ocean swims. -

Toxic kitty: When cats make you crazy
A funny thing - or morbidly sad (depends on how you view this story) - happened on my way to relocating our cat to Australia last weekend.
I discovered that owning one can kill you.
I can assure you that sadness wasn't the emotion on my mind when I had to go through hoops to get Squeak down under.
First there are mandatory rabies vaccinations. -

HSBC. Your local bank....if you live in Malaysia
I want you to read this quote attributed to John Carroll of HSBC Bank USA: “The importance of knowing and understanding the local market is ingrained in our corporate culture. Being local means more than just speaking the language, our offices around the world are staffed by local people who understand local customs and needs.”
Is that so? -
Jun 27, 2012 7:00 amA mystery with history: The pool on Rosemont Ave
Last weekend I was told a great story. Apparently there once was a three-lane swimming pool on Rosemont Avenue, Pembroke that Olympians trained in.
"It's a true story," claimed the very reputable Reverend Calvin Stone. "I was told it was there and if you look closely at the area it was allegedly supposed to be in, you can still make out the pool infrastructure."
