Dozens of polar-orbiting satellites monitor Earth's environment at around 700 kilometers above the surface. NOAA operates its own series of these satellites, called POES, but also uses data from other satellite systems, including those from NASA, the U.S. Air Force and various European and Asian space agencies. These satellites provide global coverage with sophisticated sensors, each used for monitoring different environment variables. Data from over 20 different satellites are processed by NOAA on a daily basis and are incorporated into weather models, climate models, environmental assessments and other products. Here are just a few of those datasets in real-time imagery.
