Zebras snatch late winner
Paget Lions 0 PHC Zebras 1
Cecoy Robinson’s dramatic last-minute winner spared visiting PHC Zebras the blushes against Paget Lions in a scrappy affair at Southampton Oval yesterday.
Just when it seemed as though Paget had done enough to earn a share of the spoils, the Zebras captain drilled a low shot past goalkeeper Jason Smith to snatch victory.
Paget pressed for an equaliser in the ensuing four minutes of added time but Zebras held on to secure the points.
“I thought Paget did well to try and frustrate us and try and stop us from penetrating,” Robinson said, “but in the end we were able to break them down.”
The result catapulted PHC back to the top of the table and was the perfect response after suffering their first league loss of the season against Dandy Town four days earlier.
“After losing the other night we needed that so now we’re back,” Robinson added.
Paget went into the match seeking to avenge a 4-0 defeat against PHC in the Friendship Trophy last weekend and asked a few early questions.
Dion Stovell, flashed Robert Richardson’s headed just wide and then had a shot saved by PHC goalkeeper Shaquille Trott. The visiting side bombarded Paget’s goal in search of the breakthrough with Smith rushing off his line to deny Kushae Hypol. Robinson then shot just wide before Tre Ming’s free kick was saved at the far post. Paget’s best chance came against the run of play as Stovell should have done better with only Trott to beat after being picked out by Diaje Hart.
The goal PHC’s dominance warranted arrived in the last minute as Robinson found Ming down the left side and then raced into the box to steer the return pass inside of Smith’s far post.
