Warwick Academy rule the pool
Warwick Academy swam away with the Middle School and Senior School Swimming Championships titles yesterday at the Aquatic Centre, National Sports Centre.
They amassed 280 points to win the middle school title by a convincing 75-point margin over Saltus Grammar School, with Bermuda High School securing third a further 56 points back.
Warwick Academy won the boys division with 179 points and BHS the girls division with 144.
Twins Harlan and Flynn Watson-Brown led Warwick Academy’s charge to the boys’ title.
Flynn won gold in the 50 metres freestyle and backstroke events, while Harlan won the butterfly and finished third in the freestyle. Warwick Academy rounded out the division with Daniel Kunst winning the 50 breaststroke and Brandon Adkins swimming away with the 100 individual medley title.
Joseph Vallis was victorious in the 50 butterfly and 100 individual medley while, Drew Smith was victorious in the 50 backstroke.
Bennett Copeland, of Saltus, won the 50 breaststroke and freestyle races to deny Warwick Academy a clean sweep of honours in the boys division.
Somersfield Academy’s Imojen Judd was the top performer in the under-13 girls division, winning both the 100 individual medley and the 50 backstroke.
BHS’s Giada Dudley-Pun won the 100 individual medley, Saltus’s Caitlin Coleman won in the 50 backstroke, while schoolmate Rachel Hyland won the 50 breaststroke.
Somersfield Academy won all seven races in the over-13 girls division. Myeisha Sharrief won both the 50 butterfly and freestyle races while Jaedyn Judd won the 100 individual medley and 50 backstroke. Josephine Duerden rounded out the clean sweep with victory in the 50 breaststroke. Somersfield also went on to win both the freestyle and medley relays.
Warwick Academy also encountered little resistance en route to the senior school title, which they clinched with an impressive 384 points compared with Saltus’s 236.
Warwick Academy won 15 of the 20 individual races to underline their dominance.
They swept honours in all of the ten races in the under-16 division with Gabby Pitman, Logan Watson-Brown, Jack Harvey and Brian Desmond winning two races each.
Pitman won the 50 freestyle and backstroke, Watson-Brown won the girls individual medley and butterfly, Harvey won the breaststroke and backstroke events, with Desmond winning the boys individual medley and butterfly.
Amber Simons won the girls breaststroke and Caleb Ingram claiming the gold in the freestyle race.
Warwick Academy’s Skyler Powell, the only double winner in the over-16 division, won the individual medley and butterfly races. Saltus’s Ashley Irby, who won the 800 metres women’s event during the annual Butterfield & Vallis Round the Sound swim held the previous day, won in the freestyle while classmate Zoe Skinner took the 50 backstroke. BHS’s Genevieve Lau won the 50 breaststroke.
There were five different winners in the over-16 boys division.
Joshua Thorne, of Warwick Academy, won the individual medley with schoolmates Zebedee Wakely and Lewis Sweeney winning the butterfly and breaststroke. Saltus pair Ross Cooper and Ryan Cash won the backstroke and freestyle.
