The island logged another case of Covid-19 after an infected passenger arrived on a British Airways flight on October 4, it was revealed last night.

The case was a visitor who tested positive on Day 8 of their trip.

Case isolation and contact tracing has started, Kim Wilson, the health minister said.

She added the single positive test result came today out of 551 Covid-19 tests.

There are four active cases of the illness under public health monitoring, with none in hospital. There are no cases under investigation.

The new case brought Bermuda’s confirmed cases of the coronavirus to 185.

Ms Wilson reminded the public that the flu vaccination would be available from tomorrow, at $15 a shot.

The vaccine is recommended for anyone aged over six months, with this year’s version offering protection against four strains of the seasonal virus.

She said flu shots were “particularly important” as they would ease the burden on the healthcare system over the Covid-19 pandemic.

Flu and Covid-19 share many characteristics, but Ms Wilson said the coronavirus appeared to be more contagious.

David Burt, the Premier, reminded the public to keep vigilant.

He added: “In all likelihood, this virus started from one person infected and the entire world is now living through this pandemic.”

Mr Burt said the Government was getting regular notifications from employers of redundancies or restructuring of businesses as a result of the pandemic.

He added the first Cabinet of the new government had met today, and that Curtis Dickinson, the finance minister, and Jason Hayward, the labour minister, would give a joint press conference on Monday on their latest measures to shore up the economy of the island.

Mr Burt warned that it the road to recovery would be an uphill struggle.

He said: “It is, without question, going to get more bumpy.

“There are going to be fears and doubts. But as we live on this island together, let us be in no doubt whatsoever that, working together, we will be able to overcome these challenges.”

Mr Burt added three separate sports tournaments to be held this month would highlight the island as a safe jurisdiction.

The Premier, whose portfolio includes tourism, said that WestJet and United were the only airlines not to have resumed flights to Bermuda.

He added that the island was still under a heightened quarantine restriction in the state of New York, but that efforts to tackle the problem were under way.

Mr Burt said the work from Bermuda programme, launched on August 1, had seen 354 applicants out of 452 requests approved.

The scheme will allow “digital nomads” from overseas to make the island their base for one year.

Mr Burt appealed to parents to join the effort to help redesign the public schools system, which are being overhauled with the help of teachers, members of the public and parents, at the website www.learningfirstbda.com.
