<Bz45>New Mayor Mariea Caisey speaks out
I felt very surprised and overwhelmed because the votes were so close during the count. At the first 50 it was 50, 50 then at the next count it was 100, 99 my favour and then Mr. Jones went into the lead but I finished victoriously.
What was your first official task?<$>
My first official task was to greet our visitors at the Town Hall on Saturday, January 28 at 11:45 a.m. During the winter season the Mayor greets our visitors every Wednesday and Saturday giving them a brief talk about the make up of the Corporation, the building, our Town and answers any questions they may have.
What have been your most exciting moments thus far?
The most exciting moments thus far were when I became the Mayor of St. George and the telephone calls that I received from past bank managers and friends who now live abroad and had heard of my accomplishment.
What are your immediate goals for St. George’s? <$>
We have started to work on immediate goals already. We have been in conversation with the new Heritage Officer that works for Government Mr. deGrace, concerning the Park Gate being repaired.
Our Town Foreman, Mr. Outerbridge, has been advised to have his team, repair the bricks on Water Street and Custom House Square until the roads can be completely dug up and replaced correctly, using the proper materials and putting down under ground fixtures that will be needed in the near future.
Next will be the parking voucher system for our Town. We need revenue in order to keep the Town running like a smooth oiled machine, so we must get this off of the back burner where it has been now for 5 years.
How would you describe your leadership style?
I have been well trained and have many years of experience from the Bank of Bermuda in team leadership and participation. If everyone works as a team we will succeed to reach our goals.
I also believe in majority rules, I do not care for a dictatorship environment, you can not expect to get the respect from your team if your are not a team player yourself.
Are you pleased with the appointment of Kenneth Bascome as deputy mayor?<$>
Yes I am very please with my choice of Alderman Bascome as my deputy. He is the longest serving alderman and we have worked well together on committees since I first was voted in as a councillor.
Alderman Bascome is a hard worker and he gets out there with the residents of St.George and knows all of them by name and if he does not you know he will sooner or later. He really gets around on that bike of his, I wish he had one with a side car so we could go out there together.
Do you know who will be running for the fifth common councillor position? <$>
Unfortunately we will not know who is running until Thursday after the nominations office at Town Hall closes. I know of a few whom I have received letters from, but it would not be fair to all if I mention them at this time.
What do you aim to accomplish by the end of this month as mayor?<$>
By the end of this month I hope to have job descriptions of all the workers of the Corporation. Job descriptions are very important in running a successful business, again I have the Bank to thank for that.
Will you be holding any town meetings for residents in the near future?
We are looking at maybe the end of March or if the Simulation Study comes out before we will have one then to share the findings with our residents and businesses to get their feed back and direction.
Do you have anything else you would like to say?<$>
I would like to take this time to thank the 154 voters that supported me and for the rest that did not vote for me, for coming out and casting your votes. We had a great turnout (77 percent) for such a cold and rainy day.
Also I would like to sincerely thank everyone that called and left messages of congratulations.
To my staff and Mr. King thank you for the wonderful dinner. With your support and God’s guidance I will succeed, thank you all!
