Trial begins for fatal 2020 stabbing case

The trial of a man accused of a fatal 2020 stabbing has begun in the Supreme Court with the jury viewing photographs from the scene of the crime.

Davin Dill has denied murdering Joshua Rowse and possessing a bladed article, specifically a knife, in a public place on June 14, 2020.

Opening the case yesterday, Carrington Mahoney, for the Crown, told the court that on the night of his death, Mr Rowse and others had gone to the Rubis gas station on South Road in Warwick.

Mr Mahoney said: “While he was standing at the entrance awaiting the return of one or two of his friends who went inside, the defendant’s car drove up and two persons exited the car with shirts over their faces, each armed with a knife.”

He said Mr Rowse attempted to flee and ran west along South Road but was chased and stabbed multiple times.

Mr Rowse died from his injuries.

Mr Mahoney added: “It is the Crown’s case that Davin Dill was one of the two persons who attacked and subsequently caused the death of Joshua Rowse.”

He told the court that the issue of identification was at the heart of the case, with prosecutors relying on a jigsaw puzzle of circumstantial evidence.

Mr Mahoney said: “Each piece by itself means nothing but when you put the pieces together you will get the full picture.”

The jury was shown photographs taken of the scene of the crime, showing bloodstained towels near the station’s exit ramp and a trail of blood along the nearby sidewalk.

More of what appeared to be blood was found on a grassy area west of the station, along with the broken-off tip of a serrated knife.

The jury also heard that CCTV footage from the gas station was collected by police shortly after the incident.

The trial continues.
