Rawlins in hunt for Sussex young player of the year

Delray Rawlins is in contention for the Sussex Young Player of the Season honours.

The 23-year-old Bermuda all-rounder has been named among a trio of nominees for the award, reserved for players 23 or under, which also includes left-arm fast bowler George Garton and off spinner Jack Carson.

Rawlins scored 460 runs batting in the top order and claimed 11 wickets across both formats with his left-arm orthodox spin bowling during the past season.

He made a top first-class score of 65 against Surrey, claimed career-best Twenty20 figures of three for 21 and hit an unbeaten 62 against Kent Spitfires in the Vitality Blast.

Garton and Carson are also in contention for Sussex’s Player of the Season and Performance of the Season honours.

The winners will be decided by fans who have until midnight on October 20 to cast their vote on the Sussex website.

Rawlins joined the Sussex Cricket Academy in 2015 and made his debut in the Second XI Championship the same year.

The former St George’s Cup Match player signed a one-year professional contract with the club in 2016 and made his first-class debut against Kent in the County Championship the next season.

He has since agreed to the terms of a new undisclosed deal keeping him at The 1st Central County Ground in Hove for at least another two years.

The 2020 campaign was delayed and revised because of Covid-19, which also cut short Sussex’s preseason tour to South Africa.

The County Championship was curtailed because of the coronavirus crisis and the subsequent lockdown in Britain, with the respective counties voting in favour of playing both red and white-ball cricket in a reduced season.

The one-off, first-class Bob Willis Trophy was the red-ball county cricket competition and the T20 Vitality Blast

designated as the only white-ball competition for the past season.

Sussex finished bottom of the South Group in the Bob Willis Trophy, with one win from their five four-day matches.

Rawlins and his team-mates reached the quarter-finals of the Vitality Blast, where they suffered a 45-run defeat by Lancashire Lightning to end their season.
