Entrepreneur Nadia Laws is among a select group of 100 women of colour invited to attend Fearless Moguls, a day of training in California led by top businesswomen.

Ms Laws owns Media Maven, an award-winning boutique communications and media consultancy firm.

The full-day event, designed to benefit existing or emerging entrepreneurs, takes place on Friday at Facebook headquarters at 1 Hacker Way in Menlo Park, about 25 miles south of San Francisco.

Fearless magazine publisher Arian Simone, an entrepreneur and author with more than 57,000 followers on Instagram, has sponsored attendance at the conference by Ms Laws and her peers.

Female founders of multimillion-dollar revenue generating businesses will present on topics including how to run an eight-figure business, how to grow a following on Instagram, how to raise venture capital, and retail distribution and product development. Participants will also witness a live pitch competition.

Ms Laws applied for admission to the programme after seeing details of the event on Instagram.

“Most of my friends work 9-to-5 so being around other women who are building their businesses and having a level of success was important to me,” Ms Laws says. “I want to talk to them, learn from them, and have that support. I would love to continue to grow my business from a financial standpoint.

“In Bermuda, we are very lucky to have a lot of women of colour doing amazing things. But on a global scale, we are still underrepresented. Even in Bermuda, most of the higher executive roles go to a certain demographic.

“Oprah Winfrey says she is often the only black woman on boards she sits on. She quoted Maya Angelou when she said ‘I come as one, but I stand as 10,000’, which I think is really powerful.”

Ms Laws said she has a clear idea of what she wants to take from the conference. “I want to leave the conference with a global mindset,” she says. “When I set up my business, my thought was how I could cater to the Bermuda market.

“But what I do — communications, copy writing — there’s no reason why I can’t scale that to include clients outside Bermuda. I want to hear how other women have grown their businesses so that I can create my own level of success. Working with international brands would be a dream.”

Ms Laws will fly to California on Thursday with her husband Markez and seven-month-old son, Zaccheus, returning next Monday.
