Rider more than 2.5 times the drink driving limit sent to DUI Court
A motorcyclist who admitted being more than two and a half times the legal alcohol limit when he was in collision with a car was sent to DUI Court.
Shawn Showers, 49, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday to drink driving.
The court heard that police were called to a two-vehicle collision at Palmetto Road in Pembroke on October 12.
Officers found that Showers had rear-ended a van and suffered injuries to his face as a result.
Police suspected Showers of drinking and he later admitted to having two beers before he got on the bike.
He also told police: “I know I messed up.”
Showers was taken to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital to be treated for his injuries before he was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station.
A breath test revealed that showers had 210.4 milligram of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80mg/100ml.
Showers, from Devonshire, asked to be enrolled in the court’s DUI programme to receive treatment for his drinking problem.
Magistrate Tyrone Chin adjourned the case until November 24 and released him on $1,500 bail.
He also ordered a social inquiry report and a drug assessment.
