Law firm Appleby has welcomed Khiyara Krige and Riley O’Brien to its Bermuda team. Bermudian Luisa Olander has also successfully completing the Appleby two-year legal trainee programme and is moving on to the next phase of her legal career as an associate. Ms Krige is a senior associate in the dispute resolution department. She has a background in commercial and insurance litigation, with a focus on aviation insurance disputes. Before joining Appleby, Ms Krige was a senior associate at a top tier South African law firm. Ms Krige has extensive experience in insurance and dispute resolution, as well as providing regulatory and transactional advice to a range of international clients. Ms Krige has assisted with disputes in jurisdictions throughout the African continent.She has a bachelor of social sciences and LLB degree from the University of Cape Town and a LLM degree from Cornell University. Ms Krige is an admitted member of the High Court of South Africa and the New York State Bar Association.Ms Krige said: “I am thrilled to be joining Appleby and am grateful for the opportunity to practise in this dynamic and fascinating jurisdiction.”Riley O’Brien is an associate in the corporate department. Prior to joining the firm, he practised at a top-tier Canadian law firm in Calgary, Alberta. His practice focuses on corporate and commercial law, including banking and finance acting for both financial institutions and borrowers in bilateral and syndicated financings; capital markets involving public and private offerings as well as IPOs and exchange listings; investment funds, including the structuring and formation of master and feeder structures and ILS funds; public and private M&A; and technology, start-up, and early stage companies.Mr O’Brien attended the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Law where he obtained a juris doctor with a business law concentration. He also earned a bachelor of commerce (with distinction) from the Alberta School of Business at the University of Alberta. Mr O’Brien said: “I’m excited to join Appleby and its respected team of lawyers and staff. The firm is known for its world-class service and I look forward to helping continue that reputation.”Luisa Olander joined Appleby in 2018 as a trainee and recently completed the two-year trainee programme which involves being called to the Bermuda Bar and completing four, six-month seats in various practice groups including the corporate, dispute resolution and private client and trusts departments. During her time as a trainee, Ms Olander gained experience working with local and international clients on contentious trust matters, enforcement of arbitration awards and banking disputes. She is now an associate in the dispute resolution team. Luisa said: “The last two years of my training at Appleby have been a rewarding experience. With the help of my dedicated mentors, I transformed from a law student to a practitioner of law. I knew early into my training that I wanted to qualify in the Dispute Resolution team and now I’m delighted to be embarking on a career as a member of Bermuda’s litigation Bar.
