Disaster leads to deeper connection with God
In the midst of what has been a challenging year, chaplain Larrita Adderley has seen a breakthrough in her ministry.
The coronavirus pandemic seemed to bring everything to a halt – except her relationship with Jesus.
“Everything stopped. I was laid off from work, churches had closed, we were all in lockdown – it was a disaster. But it came with a purpose. It pushed me to connect deeper and birth new spiritual gifts. I was locked down with Jesus.
“It was a quiet time for me. I would go to Tobacco Bay and there was really no one else on the beach. I would just pray and write. Pray and write.”
It’s how In Your Throne Room: The Secret Place was born.
The book is her second in only a matter of months. In May she published Float: Trusting in God to Carry You.
“I’ve always told my story through my music but this year God moved me to express myself in a new way,” said Ms Adderley, who became a chaplain in 2018. “Writing has become my outlet. It is another outlet in ministry for me; very different from singing, but it’s the same expression of my experience with God.
“I believe Jesus wrote this book with me. He is my coauthor.”
She feels that In Your Throne Room equips readers “to enter into true intimacy with Jesus Christ”.
Inspired by Psalms 91, the book is about the experience of going into a ‘secret place’ with God.
“As you read this text, walk into the throne room with expectancy, humility, and readiness to apply what God wants from you,” she said.
She sought a personal relationship with God having struggled with her faith at different stages. Eventually she realised it was the one thing that could carry her through life’s challenges.
“I had to go into the throne room myself. I had to create a place for just me and Jesus.
“Once you get into this level of intimacy with God, nothing can shake your faith. Nothing. This is important for the Christian walk because God wants to connect with us in private in order to bless us publicly.
“I’ve seen miracles upon miracles, blessing upon blessings. I’ve been healed. Jobs have come miraculously. Favour has been upon my life.”
The book was edited and published by fellow Bermudian author Crystal Holdipp at Inspire Me Publishing.
It touches on several aspects of having a relationship with Christ through chapters such as The Sleeping Jesus, The House of Prayer and The Maggots. Each discusses a different aspect of the faith journey.
“I want my readers to find that secret place with God,” Ms Adderley said. “Don’t be like the Pharisees in the Bible who are more concerned with showing their holiness to others; focus on being intimate with God. Lock yourself in with God. God wants to change our lives.
“You can’t be too busy. You must spend some time with God in order for things to happen. Covid gave a lot of us that extra time and I hope people used it to connect with God and strengthen their relationships.”
Ms Adderley also used her quiet time to release two singles. Both I’m a Winner and Nobody Else feature Lynwood “Brother Richie” Richardson.
“I’m listening to God speak to me and trusting that he will use me as a vessel to reach the hearts of others,” she said.
“So many have felt defeated this year and there were times when I did too. But I believe God always has something good for us. All He asks is that we be faithful to Him. Two books and two singles in one year – in 2020! It’s amazing what is possible when you trust Him.”
