D’Andre Wainwright has made an immediate impact at new club Durham City.The forward has netted four goals in as many appearances, including a hat-trick on his club debut in a 4-3 defeat at home to Northern League Division 2 rivals Willington on September 5.“I tell myself I’ll score a hat-trick every game just to set a standard for myself,” Wainwright, who also has two assists, told The Royal Gazette.“It surprised me I actually did on my debut because I haven’t scored a hat-trick since youth football.“It was such a great feeling that I know I’ll get time and time again. This is just the beginning.“Most strikers want to get that third once they have scored two in a match. Luckily, my third goal, it was a tap in to secure the man of the match.”Wainwright was also on target in Durham’s next outing five days later away to Easington Colliery at Welfare Park, which ended in a 3-2 defeat.“I’ve settled in right away because I wanted to hit the ground running and now I feel like I’m Durham’s No 1 striker,” the Bermuda forward said.“I have helped my team a lot over these last few weeks, being named captain and things like that, even if results haven’t gone our way.”Wainwright was recommended to Durham by scouts after being spotted playing for Somerset Trojans.He agreed to join the club in April having impressed the coaching staff and is excited about the challenge of playing non-League football.“Every player wants to have the opportunity to play semi-professionally or professionally and I’m excited about this opportunity,” he said. “I definitely want to grasp this opportunity.”Durham are bottom of the table having lost their opening four fixtures of the season.The club received a reprieve to stay in the Northern League Division 2 despite having been at the bottom of the standings after the English FA and the National League System reached a consensus to end the season early because of Covid-19.All results were expunged, meaning no promotion or relegation.Didier Agathe, the former Celtic and Aston Villa defender, is Durham’s manager and also heads up the club’s academy.The Frenchman won multiple league and cup honours with Celtic and also enjoyed successful Champions League campaigns and a memorable Uefa Cup run, which ended in a defeat to José Mourinho’s Porto in the final.
