Nahki Wells shines in first start as Bristol City win Carabao Cup tie against Coventry

Nahki Wells set up two Bristol City goals in the Carabao Cup victory over Coventry City, before going off injured in the 85th minute

Nahki Wells enjoyed his first start of the season for Bristol City, setting up two goals before being substituted late in the game with an injury in a 4-1 win over Coventry City in the Carabao Cup first round at Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium yesterday.

The pitch at Coventry’s CBS Arena was deemed unplayable after the ground hosted concerts and rugby matches during the Commonwealth Games.

Wells, one of five changes to the City team that lost 3-2 at home to Sunday in the league on Saturday, created the opening for Kal Naismith to head City in front in the twelfth minute with his header back across goal following a corner.

Tommy Conway scored from close range in the eighteenth minute to double the lead before Wells had another assist on the half-hour mark which enabled Conway to convert his second goal of the match, a right-footed shot from the centre of the box.

City led comfortably 3-0 at the half as Wells went close to scoring himself in the 58th minute when his shot from the left side of the six yard box from a corner was just wide of the near post.

Coventry pulled a goal back in the 62nd minute when Jamie Allen scored. Wells, given an eight rating by Bristol Post for his performance, went off injured in the 85th minute after taking a knock, replaced by Sam Bell.

However, the win was already in the bag before Andreas Weimann extended the lead with a fourth goal four minutes into stoppage time.

Bristol City will be on the road again for their second-round match against Wycombe Wanderers during the week of August 22.
