Local player Trey Mallory landed a title at the Bermuda ITF Junior Open Tournament as he partnered with singles winner Ellis Short of the United States to comfortably beat fellow local pair Tariq Simons and Scott Redmond 6-0, 6-1 in the doubles final at the WER Joell Tennis Stadium yesterday.The win for Short marked the first time that a boys and girls player won both a single and doubles titles, after Canadian Catherine Denysiewicz-Slowek’s double success this week. Short and Mallory, who exited the singles tournament in the second round, played some of their best tennis of the tournament to clinch the final in less than an hour. Simons and Redmond did briefly threaten to turn things around in the second set when they won the first game. However, it would be their only success as Mallory and Short tied it up in the second game despite Simons and Redmond coming from 40-0 down to tie it up at deuce before their opponents won the game. They held their serve and broke their opponents three times as Mallory sealed the win with an ace to win a second straight game without conceding a point. “I’m happy to win the doubles after a disappointing singles result,” said Mallory after he and Short received their prizes from Michael Wolfe, President of the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association.“We didn’t drop our energy and throughout the whole match we played really well. They are good, but we played probably our best doubles match.”Short was happy to cap off his week in Bermuda with his second title. “My first ITF singles and doubles wins coming in the same place in the same week so it will be special memories,” said Short who had a walkover in the singles final when his opponent, Jakub Ostajewski, also of the United States, got an injury and could not play in the final.“In the doubles final we played really well today, definitely our best match of the tournament. “The scoreline might show that it was pretty easy for us but that was definitely no the case. “There were four or five deuce points that really could have gone either way, especially in the second set. “They are great fighters, yesterday in the semis they were down a double-break in the second set and won 16-14 in the breaker, so we knew we couldn’t relax.”
