Despite the Carifta Swimming Championships being postponed as a precaution against the worldwide spread of Covid-19, the Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association has announced their squad in the hope of the event being rescheduled this year.The Championships were scheduled to be held from April 3 to 15 at the Aquatic Centre in Wildey, Barbados, but on Saturday, a press release sent by president of the Barbados Aquatic Sports Association Tony Selby confirmed the postponement of the event.Despite no rescheduled date being announced, Bermuda’s association has confirmed their squad as an acknowledgement to the hard work and endeavours of the selected athletes. Among the 11 to 12 age group will be, Elena Pearman, Marleigh Howes and Imojen Judd, while Elijah Daley, Elan Daley, Giada Dudley-Pun, Josephine Duerden, Bella Howes, Jaedyn Judd and Myeisha Sharrieff make up the 13 to age group.Finally the squad’s 15 to 17 age group consists of Brian Desmond, Jack Harvey, Caleb Ingham, Finn Moseley, Logan Watson-Brown, Taylor White and Sam Williamson.“The Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association has been in constant communication with our region regarding the upcoming competitions of Carifta and CCCAN,” said a statement from BASA. “We would like to thank the Barbados Swimming Federation for their decision to postpone instead of cancelling the event. “This will at least give hope to all the athletes that have worked so hard to compete while making sure that we are taking all necessary precautions for the safety of our members and the public at large. “The team representing BASA at Carifta Swimming Championships was to be announced on Friday [March 13], but we waited until having the confirmation from Barbados before making our announcement. “We think it is important that we acknowledge the team that was to be announced so that we can celebrate the performance of the 17 young people to be selected.”Meanwhile BASA has also confirmed that they hope to be able to reschedule the Short Course Championships, that were postponed after the first two days of competition last week due to the government’s suggesting of restricting events with more than 50 people.
