How to stay in shape this summer

Take it outside: embrace the warm weather by moving your workout away from the gym

During the winter months, it is easy to focus on a healthier you. It seems easier to spend an hour on fitness after work, when the sun has already set.

As summer starts to kick in and the days get longer, fewer people tend to want to invest that time.

So, with summer vacations and gorgeous evenings in our future, what’s the best way for staying fit?

1. Monitoring sugar intake

With Heroes weekend, Cup Match and personal vacations, it is easy to fall into unhealthy eating habits. Too many meals out, and one too many alcoholic beverages can end up being a recipe for disaster.

Limit your alcohol to weekends only. One glass of wine can be about 200 calories. Having a few glasses throughout your week can really add up. When eating out, try to go for the “healthier” option. Stay away from starchy sides and processed meats at BBQs. When travelling, eat healthy snacks and try to stay away from buffet-style meals.

2. Make time for fitness

It is so easy to use the summer holidays as an excuse to skip the gym. If you are travelling, organise a few active activities with the family or use your holiday to try new classes or gyms.

If you are finding it difficult to exercise, sit down with a personal trainer and help create a workout schedule that will work for you over the next few weeks. Don’t make excuses.

Finally, take your workouts outside. The days are longer and the weather is beautiful, so take advantage!

3. Enjoy it

Get creative, and get the whole family involved. One of my favourite summer snacks are healthy Popsicles. Blend your favourite fruit combination with coconut water before freezing in Popsicle moulds. Indulge in a sweet treat without the guilt. Take your meals outside with picnics on the beach. Pack a healthy meal and enjoy the extra sunny hours of your day. You don’t have to give up all the hard winter work to enjoy your summer. Maintain balance during your holidays by having fun without letting your health suffer!
