The SPCA might be taking advantage of renovations at their Valley Road property which would allow them to create two small apartments on the property for rent, according to shelter chairman Dr. Andrew Madeiros.

"We don't want to go in to the landlord business," he clarified. "We wouldn't be charging top dollar - but these are two potential steady incomes for the shelter."

Whether the shelter goes ahead with plans to lease out the properties is secondary to the main renovations taking place at Valley Road, he said.

The biggest project at Valley Road seems to be the destruction of the old observation building behind the main office, and the construction in its place of a two-storey building complete with a volunteer staff room, a medical room, and isolation rooms to separate incoming or sick dogs, cats, and other animals. There will also be an office for the inspector and a wheelchair accessible bathroom.

Upstairs in the building Dr. Madeiros said plans include a meeting room, an educational classroom, and a large storage area. The entire building will be "kind of a corporate office" for the shelter. Some renovations outside the buildings include putting in a new retaining wall on the property, a new storage shed and laundry area, the creation of an outdoor cat run connected to the indoors, and a covered, secure area for rabbits and Guinea pigs.

The shelter also plans to create a new, more easily accessible entrance to the Valley Road property. The SPCA will be holding fundraisers in the near future to help raise money for the renovations.
