Alex Scott selected as Premier

Alex Scott with new Deputy Premier Ewart Brown and Terry Lister.

Alex Scott will take over as Premier of Bermuda after Jennifer Smith resigned the leadership of the Progressive Labour Party (PLP) on Sunday night following a revolt by half the members of her newly-elected government.

The appointment was made at an acrimonious three and half hour meeting of the PLP, which also appointed Transport Minister Dr Ewart Brown as deputy leader.

Mr. Scott said the party would be concentrating more on social issues such as housing and seniors.

The PLP beat the United Bermuda Party in last Thursday's general election, winning 22 out of 36 seats.

But 11 of the new PLP MPs, including many cabinet ministers who were concerned about Ms Smith's arrogant and secretive leadership style, announced they would not serve in her cabinet.

Mr. Scott is expected to name a cabinet on Monday which will be sworn in by Governor Sir John Vereker.

Ms Smith stormed out of the meeting with her chief of staff Colonel David Burch and refused to comment.
