"When I got a new toy, instead of playing with it I would pull it apart."

Chris Robinson served a four year apprenticeship and gained his City & Guilds Automotive Mechanic certification. City & Guilds is a UK based world class designation that prepared him for a career in the automotive industry.

"As a young child I was always interested in how things worked."

Mr. Robinson worked for 10 years as a mechanic before moving to Bermuda Emissions Control Ltd. where he inspects cars for their annual safety and emissions tests.

"I receive the car from the customer and because it is the first time most people have been through the facility I need to give them some brief instructions on the inspections and show them where they can stand to watch while the tests are conducted."

Mr. Robinson is then responsible for putting the car through the various parts of the examination and inputting the results into the computer system.

"I will then go over the results with the customer to let them know how their car did."

He says the best part of the job is people's reaction to the new facilities and programme.

"For the most part they are impressed with the state-of-the-art equipment and can't stop commenting on how wonderful it all it is."

Of course, as mechanic Mr. Robinson enjoys working with the all the new equipment at his disposal.

He is also quick to pay tribute to the founder of Bermuda Emissions Control Ltd., Donal Smith.

"The job that I do today all comes from one man's desire. He had the knowledge of emissions and wants to protect the environment for generations to come."

Mr. Robinson says the math and science he learnt in high school have served him well in his career. In addition to his automotive qualification he also needs to be a "people friendly person" as he is constantly interacting with the public.
