Outstanding teenagers are honoured at event

Knows where he's going: Davon Gibbs stands with his family who helped him to turn his life around and get back onto the right path. Davon was given the award for most progress at the 2010 Outstanding Teen Awards on Sunday night and has aspirations of becoming a lawyer after he graduates this year.

Jacari Brimmer-Landy is to receive a scholarship of $2,500 after being named Bermuda's Outstanding Teen for 2010.

The other winners of the Bermuda Outstanding Teen Awards Programme will each receive a scholarship of $750.

Alexis Smith and Coy Millett are the winners of the Spiritual Leadership category; Rebecca Heyliger and Terryn Fray for Sports; Alyssa Rose and Jacari Brimmer-Landy for Leadership; Marshlene Moniz and Davon Gibbs for Most Progress; Jahnae Harvey and Russell Lister for Community Service; Jessica Lewis and Eunico Trott for Incentive; Christine Allison and Ivan Sanchez for Academic Achievement; Lela Sujani for Visual Arts (there were no male nominations); and Christine Allison and Jayson Jackson for Performing Arts.

The awards programme began in 1982, with Malcolm Brock, now a surgeon and professor at the renowned Johns Hopkins University Hospital, the first overall winner.

Teen Services started the awards to acknowledge and honour the Island's outstanding high achievers. It is the only local awards programme for senior school students.

The Outstanding Teen must show evidence of excellence in academics, community involvement; leadership; sport and performing arts; and also demonstrate personal integrity.

The scholarship awards are sponsored by donations from the Queen's Bermuda Silver Jubilee Trust, Government, offshore and local businesses, and the public.
