DNA database links 10 suspects to past crimes

Police have now been able to link ten suspects to past crimes, thanks to the Island's growing DNA bank.

Between January 1 and July 31 this year, a total of 1,190 DNA samples have been received by the Forensic Support Unit of the Bermuda Police Service from 1,155 people detained under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 2006.

Matching these samples with those from past crime scenes have already produced ten 'hits.'

Minister of Justice Kim Wilson said the DNA bank demonstrated her commitment to improving the criminal justice system.

The Senator said: "These developments signify a major achievement in forensic evidence for Bermuda, prompted by the implementation of the PACE Act 2006, which has revolutionised policing in Bermuda."

Starting in September 2008, everyone detained by Police for a recordable offence is required to provide a DNA sample. These samples are added to a growing database, which can then be searched to connect crimes and suspects.
