BCS to stage IT security seminar

IT security threats and how to deal with them will be the focus for the Security Services Roadshow hosted by BCS, IBM’s local agency tomorrow.

The event, which will be held at the Elbow Beach Hotel, will look at a number of issues including intrusion attempts, malware, spam and phishing attacks and other vulnerabilities and will feature a presentation from IBM’s Security Services lead, Rick Young, on the 2010 IBM Security Trend and Risk Report.

The report, produced twice a year, provides statistical information about all aspects of threats that affect internet security, such as software vulnerabilities and public exploitation, web-based threats and general cyber criminal activity. It is intended to help corporations, and the public at large understand the changing nature of the threat landscape and what might be done to mitigate it.

Mr Young will also provide an overview of IBM’s IT security services offerings that assist businesses in integrating security in all processes and applications and in driving down the cost of compliance.

Aaron Smith, BCS’s general manager, said: “According to IBM’s Trend and Risk Report findings, reported vulnerabilities are at an all time high - up 36 percent, and 55 percent of all vulnerabilities disclosed had no vendor-supplied patches available at the end of the first half of 2010.

“Based on these findings, it is important for organisations to ask themselves how confident they are that they are protected from vulnerabilities before a vendor supplied patch is available. They also need to think about what other vulnerabilities do they not know about for example data loss how much confidential data is being exported out from behind their corporate firewall? All these questions and many other security issues will be addressed at this session. “

The breakfast session will take place at Elbow Beach Hotel’s Paget Suite between 8.30am to 11.30am.
