Pressure could decide outcome in the East

What?s at stake: The priceless silver Cup with a history of its own, coveted since 1902 when the annual classic began.

On paper, Cup Match this year should be over by lunch time on the second day.A St George's side packed with potential match-winners are taking on a weaker Somerset team who have only won seven times at Wellington Oval since games were moved there in 1921, and their last victory in the East was 20 years ago. However, games are never decided on paper, underdogs have a nasty habit of pulling off shock wins, and Cup Match is an occasion with a life all its own. Players who are expected to star can crumble under the weight of that expectation, while others who might have slipped in under the radar, shine. The danger for St George's will be in underestimating their opponents. Somerset might look like the weaker side, but they have some match winners of their own, as well as a batsman who could become the greatest run scorer in the history of the Classic.Janeiro Tucker, in what could be his last Cup Match, is only 127 runs from passing Charlie Marshall's total of 1,357 runs, and if he does manage it this week, he will have done it in almost 20 innings less than the St George's star. However, Tucker isn't the dominant force he once was and that's where the likes of Dion Stovell and Malachi Jones come in. The two Bermuda internationals have proven their ability against some of the best Associate sides around in the past 12 months, and Stovell's 73 against Namibia in Dubai in April was one of the most brutal innings a Bermuda batsman has played for some time. The holders' much vaunted pace-attack of Stefan Kelly, Justin Pitcher and Damali Bell will hold little to fear for the Southampton slugger, and if he gets going then Somerset could yet make a game of it. As they could if Deunte Darrell repeats his heroics of last year, or Kamau Leverock displays his talent to its fullest. While St George's are favourites to win they have issues of their own, not least in picking a couple of players who have been selected on reputation rather than form.St David's skipper OJ Pitcher is one who has struggled with both bat and ball in the Premier Division this season, but Cup Match tends to bring out the best in him, and his obdurate 63 in Somerset last time out ensured his team weren't fighting to save the game when the rain came. Conversely, Fiqre Crockwell has been in fine form in the Premier Division, but his Cup Match record is less than impressive and he has a habit of getting himself out at higher levels of the game.In the end it could all come down to that great unknowable, pressure. Which captain will handle it better, which bowler can keep his head in the face of a sure to be encountered onslaught, and who will take the catch that lights up Cup Match and swings the encounter one side's way.All the little nuances of cricket that are seen every week in the domestic game will be magnified a hundred times in a swirling atmosphere of deafening noise, intense heat, and unbelievable pressure as the hopes and fears of thousands rest on the shoulders of 22 players tasked with bringing glory to their respective communities. Most of that expectation will weigh heavily on just one man, St George's skipper Oronde Bascome. He has the best team, he's at home, and he's expected to win. However, for all their posturing and insistence that they are only interested in winning, St George's still have the greatest safety net of all this week, they don't have to win. As holders a draw will be good enough, and if the game is in the balance it is hard to see them risking the trophy to secure it outright. What of Somerset and their skipper Jekon Edness? To say there is no pressure on the captain would be untrue, but there is great freedom in knowing you're not expected to achieve something. The test will come if the challengers get the upper hand and have to risk it all to win, then the underdogs will be the ones dealing with the weight of expectation, and the pressure will be all the greater for being completely unexpected.
