Verdict is awaited in Kevin Brown court case

Kevin Brown, the doctor son of former Premier Ewart Brown, was awaiting his fate last night as a jury considered sex charges that could land him in prison for life.Prosecutor Ann-Marie Wise told the jury at Los Angeles Superior Court that Kevin Brown sexually abused 11 female patients when he gave them inappropriate breast or pelvic examinations for unrelated health complaints. The 40-year-old is charged with sexually assaulting 11 patients over the course of five years at three Los Angeles clinics he owned. The alleged victims include an undercover cop who participated in a Los Angeles Police Department sting in 2008 that led to his arrest.During the trial, Ms Wise said Kevin Brown had been acquitted in 2004 and 2006 of similar charges. He pleaded not guilty to 30 felony counts, ranging from sexual exploitation to forcible rape in the current case. Three additional counts, all involving one victim, were stricken from the case during the trial.According to the Associated Press news agency in Los Angeles, which is four hours behind Bermuda, the jury was due to be sent out late afternoon there. It was impossible to tell when a verdict might come through.During the trial, Kevin Brown’s attorney Edi Faal claimed the vice officer lied and none of the other women involved ever alerted his staff about what was allegedly occurring.Mr Faal said during his closing speech that the alleged victims who came forward lacked credibility, and represented a small fraction of the accused doctor’s total appointments.“That is a statistically insignificant amount,” said Mr Faal.Dr Ewart Brown and his wife Wanda Henton-Brown have been in court on an “almost daily” basis to support Dr Kevin Brown according to observers of the trial. The accused man has been free on $4 million bail throughout the case.
