St David’s cricket coach Wendell Smith would love the chance for his table-topping side to have a crack at Marlyebone Cricket Club when they tour the Island next month, writes Josh Ball.Smith’s team are running away with the Premier Division this season and he would love nothing more than to see his side test themselves against overseas opposition in St David’s.The MCC confirmed yesterday that the tour, which was first reported to be happening by The Royal Gazette on Wednesday, will go ahead and will see them play a series of 50 over and Twenty20 games against Bermuda and Invitational XIs during their two week stay.Bermuda Cricket Board have yet to release a full schedule for the visit, which is pencilled in to take place between September 23 and October 7, however it is also likely to see members of the MCC squad, which normally includes several former professional cricketers, put players from Bermuda’s national academy squads through their paces in a series of coaching sessions.“The tour is definitely going ahead and we’re all set to depart on September 23,” said an MCC spokesman. “It’s going to be approximately a two week tour and it’s going to be based around 50 over and 20 over cricket.“We’re playing a few games against the national squad and a few games against Invitational XIs and we’re also hoping to do some coaching sessions with Bermuda academy teams and some local schools as well.”The games won’t necessarily all take place at the National Sports Centre, when the MCC last toured in 1987 they also played at –Bailey’s Bay and Smith is hoping that supporters will get a chance to see them in the East End.“With the likes of Stefan Kelly and Justin Pitcher, we’ve got a nice little team just now,” said Smith, whose team wouldn’t look out of place representing Bermuda.“It would be nice if we could get a game against the MCC.“If they (Bermuda Cricket Board) do open it up to clubs they might go with the Belco champions and the league champions or something like that, but they’ll probably just go five games against the Bermuda national team which would give David Moore a chance to play a lot of different players.“I’d like to see them play at a club field like St David’s rather than everything up at the National Stadium, the atmosphere is just different being at St David’s and you’d get more people out to watch.”
