Furbert to chair ABIR Policy Committee

Malcolm Furbert, Bermuda general counsel of Catlin Group Ltd, has been appointed chair of the Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers’ (ABIR) Policy Committee.The Committee serves as the chief policy body reviewing a wide range of measures from insurance regulation in Bermuda, to international regulatory standards, Bermuda workplace regulations, and public policy concerning US natural disaster and reinsurance regulation.Since 2007, Mr Furbert has served as Catlin Bermuda’s chief legal officer. Prior to that he worked as a corporate lawyer with one of Bermuda’s leading law firms and has held several general counsel positions with other Bermuda-based re/insurance companies. He is also a member of the Bar of England and Wales and the Bermuda Bar.“Malcolm has been an active participant of this committee and ABIR values his leadership and contribution to the association,” said Brad Kading, president of ABIR. “We look forward to working with him and appreciate Catlin’s willingness to make his time available to us.”Mr Furbert succeeds Kirstin Romann Gould, executive vice-president and general counsel of XL Group Ltd who has chaired the ABIR Committee for six years and has made a big contribution to the Association’s work during that time, according to Mr Kading.“Kirstin navigated policy work for ABIR members on substantial enhancements to Bermuda’s solvency regime,” said Mr Kading. “Work that is instrumental to keeping Bermuda as a reputable domicile for reinsurers. We owe her a great debt of gratitude.”
