Bermuda had a great showing in a prestigious modelling competition in London.Four young Bermudians entered Top Model World Wide 2012.Julia Lines, 15, was named first runner-up in the Top Model Worldwide category, beating out girls from over 40 countries.Sophie Fraser-Smith, 15, was selected as runner-up in the commercial category and won a special beautiful skin award.Katherine Arnfield, 16 and Kalena Astwood, 23, also took part.Julia’s mother, Sheree Lines, said she was overjoyed to see her daughter do so well.“It was wonderful watching our daughter blossom a year after being selected to represent Bermuda in Top Model Worldwide,” she said. “The way she was able to give interviews at a moment’s notice and hold conversations with designers, photographers and modelling agencies from around the world has amazed us. She has many opportunities now to consider so it will be interesting to see what happens next.”The young women were selected to participate at a City of Hamilton fashion show last year. Julia was roped into the competition by a friend at the last minute, and had to be convinced to take part.“Now everything seems to keep falling into place and modelling is something I will try to stick with for awhile,” she said. “I still don’t want to model as a career, but I could do it on the side.”During the competition she wore dresses by Omar Mansour and Analili, which pleased her, as she is a fan of both designers.“They sell Analili at Daisy’s here so I knew what to expect,” she said. “I love the clothes at Daisy’s. The second outfit we wore was one of our bathing suits. We had to provide that ourselves. The last one was Omar Mansour. I knew what his clothes were like and he is one of my favourite designers. We had fittings before the actual night so we knew what we were wearing. Some of the girls had to be sewn or pinned into their dresses.”Sophie said it was an amazing experience, and she only found out at the last minute that she was taking part.“It was a rush and then when I was there it was thrilling,” she said. “We had to be there seven hours before the show. The moment where I saw the other girls was the most nerve wracking. Then I met them and everything was okay after that.”Katherine, 16, said she was nervous at first.“It was exciting meeting all the different people,” she said. “It was a great experience. I met so many different, interesting people and had such a great time and experienced things I never thought I would be lucky enough to experience. I just did it and the designers seemed pretty happy. With this show I didn’t place but it was a great experience anyway. When you walk out on the catwalk it is a really thrilling feeling when you go out there with all the cameras and the people watching you. You have to learn to get into the zone and show the clothes off to the best of your ability.”Miss Astwood said this was her first show abroad so it was very exciting for her. Her mother and sister went to the show to support her.“I wasn’t as nervous as I thought I would be,” she said. “I was more nervous when we did the practice run when we first got to see the runway. Once the show came and we were all dressed with nails done and hair and make-up done, I got into the zone and was excited to go out there. I was worried about falling. I had this long elegant dress on. When we had the fittings I noticed that it touched the floor. I said okay, I need to find some shoes that have more height.“When I did the Evolution Fashion show [at City Hall] last summer that was my first runway show. It was on my bucket list. Just the fact that an experience like this great came from it is great. I think I am going to pursue it at least locally, but I still want to focus on building my career. Right now I am going to take some time to focus on exams for my job. I would love to do some modelling on the side locally.”The Bermuda Department of Tourism offered a trip to Bermuda as a prize for Top Model Worldwide. As a result, the winner of the competition will visit this year.The next City of Hamilton Fashion Show will be held on July 7 at City Hall. A model call will be held tomorrow at #6 Pier from 11am to 3pm.“We thought it would be great to show young people what can come from attending a model call and participating in the City of Hamilton Fashion Show,” said Aderonke Bademosi Wilson, representing the City of Hamilton. “These are really great examples of what can happen. We are not promising anything. However, New York modelling agency Wilhelmina will be here.”All ages and sizes are welcome for men, women and children. Females need to bring four-inch heels and swimsuit models bring a bathing suit.
