OBA’s position on city elections is questioned by PLP candidate

A PLP candidate has called upon the One Bermuda Alliance to clarify its position on municipality elections following critical comments posted on Facebook.Patricia Gordon-Pamplin wrote that the OBA argued against taxing businesses without giving them the vote when the Municipalities Act was debated in Parliament.Business owners were given a corresponding vote to the number of properties they owned in the City of Hamilton, before the Act was passed.Walton Brown, the approved candidate for Pembroke Central, insisted that OBA leader Craig Cannonier should tell the Country whether his party believes that business owners in the city should be allowed to vote.In her post on the social media site on Tuesday, Ms Gordon-Pamplin said City of Hamilton residents get two votes — one for the municipality’s elections and another for national ones.“The business owner and those who keep the city running get zero votes in the muni,” she wrote.“The position was driven by a number of Gov’t MPs who never ran a business so maybe it was difficult to understand.“But, if nothing else, it was good electioneering for those who are impressed by such things.”Mr Brown is candidate in a constituency that is home to many of the City of Hamilton’s residents. He said he was “disturbed that at this point in our history there is a call by the official Opposition to return to elections based on privilege”.“To call for a vote retention on the part of business owners on the grounds they pay taxes runs contrary to the principles of modern democracy: we elect our leaders on the basis of one person, one vote.”Mr Brown continued: “A logical extension of the OBA argument is that all businesses should vote in general elections since they all pay taxes. This is an untenable and very undemocratic argument.“Ms Pamplin’s comments have been endorsed by the Deputy Leader of the OBA, Mr Michael Dunkley, but I cannot believe this undemocratic position is truly the view of the OBA, a party we have been told was founded to bring a new vibrant approach to politics.”Approximately one-third of Pembroke Central constituents are eligible to vote in the upcoming City of Hamilton elections and are “keen to participate”, he added.“I call on OBA leader Mr Craig Cannonier to clarify the OBA position on voting in the Corporation of Hamilton elections and whether or not they endorse the position advanced by Ms Gordon-Pamplin that business owners should be given back the vote.”The Progressive Labour Party yesterday issued a press release stating that democracy is better served when citizens, not businesses, are given equal rights to vote.“In modern democracies businesses do not get votes. It’s fundamentally undemocratic,” the release stated.“It’s an oligarchy that disenfranchises people on Court and Angle Streets and empowers a privileged few on Front Street.”It continued: “The PLP has empowered voters from homes on Dundonald Street, Elliott Street, Court Street and Angle Street to walk to City Hall and cast their vote for Mayor, Alderman and Councillor just like the voters in New York, London and every other city do. The OBA/UBP’s position is a dangerous one and it is a threat to our democracy.”The OBA, which has not opposed giving the residents the vote, was contacted for comment but did not respond by press time last night.
