Island’s culture benefits from 400th anniversary celebration funds

The Cultural Legacy Fund has received a major financial boost from the Bermuda 2009 Charitable Trust. The charity received $108,000 in the final distribution of the trust’s assets. The trust was established to organise a series of “memorable events” in the lead-in to Bermuda’s 400th anniversary of “continuous human habitation”.Trust committee chairwoman Conchita Ming and treasurer Michael Schrum presented the donation to Economy Minister Patrice Minors this week.“On behalf of the Government and the Ministry responsible for culture and the arts, I am delighted to accept this gift from you. It is noteworthy and commendable that the Bermuda 2009 Charitable Trust is also committed to fostering growth and development in Bermuda’s culture, heritage and the arts,” Mrs Minors said.“One significant and lasting initiative that was birthed during the commemoration of Bermuda’s 400th milestone, was the establishment of the Cultural Legacy Fund. The Cultural Legacy Fund is but one avenue through which this Government tangibly demonstrates its commitment to supporting and ensuring that our cultural heritage and the arts are preserved, promoted, nurtured and developed by the provision of financial grants.”Said Mrs Ming: “The Trustees feel that the objectives of the Cultural Legacy Fund are in keeping with the theme of the Bermuda 2009 committee, which was to ‘Celebrate Bermuda and Her People’.“The Cultural Legacy Fund is there to foster excellence in culture, heritage and the arts; to increase access and participation and to facilitate development and growth. What better way to utilise the funds?”Mrs Minors noted the donation was made during Heritage Month.“Our heritage celebrations, throughout the month of May, have and continue to focus on our shared history and the people who have made significant contributions in our community,” she said. “Indeed this financial gift helps sustain Bermuda’s culture and the arts.”Other assets distributed by the trust include:l the Anniversary Monument. Designed and constructed by Will Collieson, it was given to the Parks Department and is now sited on Barry Road in St George;l the Time Capsule, given to the Corporation of St George;l the Walkway of History, which was transferred to the City of Hamilton;l the remaining assets have been transferred to the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs.A further donation of $8,000 was given to the department with a recommendation that the funds be used to “commission an artwork to celebrate another 400 year landmark this year — the 400th anniversary of the permanent settlement of Bermuda”.
