The SPCA is being overwhelmed by a surplus of guinea pigs.
There are currently 12 guinea pigs up for adoption because of owner surrenders and wild guinea pig rescues from peoples properties. The SPCA is looking for adoptive families for the guinea pigs, as well as some rabbits and lots of adult cats and kittens.
To adopt a guinea pig from the SPCA, fill out an adoption application form at the shelter. Staff at the SPCA ensure prospective adopters are informed about the care needed for guinea pigs, said Shelby Rodriguez, the kennel and facilities manager.
They require a lot of work, lots of fruits and vegetables, lots of vitamin C, Ms Rodriguez said. We make sure people know they can be just as high maintenance as a cat or any other animal.
Part of the reason for the excess of guinea pigs could be how quickly they reproduce. A guinea pig can produce up to five litters in a year, with three being the average litter size.
