Bermudian charged with robberies in Halifax

A 24-year-old Bermudian man is in custody at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility on charges involving a series of robberies in Canada.

Jakio Williams of Riviera Estate, Southampton was formally charged last week with two women and a 17-year-old girl in connection with three recent robberies in Halifax.

According to a report by Dan Arsenault of the Halifax Chronicle Herald the defendants appeared in a Halifax provincial court last Thursday.

The first robbery is alleged to have taken place on May 24 at 2.42am on Brunswick Street in Halifax involving two female youths who asked a man if they could use his cellphone and then ran off with it.

The victim gave chase but was assaulted and robbed by two men. The two men charged included Jakio Williams.

The second robbery was reported just one minute prior to the second robbery at 2.41am by a 19-year-old man who said he was robbed of his cellphone and wallet.

The third incident occurred near Dalhousie University when two men armed with guns entered a residence and threatened two male occupants.

According to Halifax Chronicle Hearald, one of the suspects “used pepper spray on the victim” and the robbers made off with an undisclosed amount of “cash, electronic items and other goods”.

The two women, Fatouma Youssouf Abdi and Breagh Michelle Marie MacNeil, both 20 were charged with Williams last Thursday and were later released from custody.

All three were later arrested again for “allegedly violating their release conditions”. A 17-year-old was also arrested at the same time.

The two women face “robbery, weapons and other charges”.

Williams is charged with “break and enter, robbery, possession of stolen goods, forcible confinement, assault with a weapon, uttering threats and other weapons offences”.

The Canadian newspaper reports that “because Williams isn’t a Canadian citizen, police alerted the Canada Border Service Agency”.

The case is due to be mentioned in the Halifax provincial court on July 26, when applications for bail are due to be heard. In the interim, Williams will be kept at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility.
