As the world’s biggest sporting event, the Olympics draws international attention every four years. In light of many comments regarding CableVision’s coverage of the games, The Royal Gazette took to the streets to see what Bermuda had to say about local coverage. One Southampton teenager simply felt the coverage was all-around poor, saying “[the coverage] wasn’t the very best.”And it seems that that sentiment was far reaching. When asked whether they liked the coverage provided on VSB, two women from Smith's said: “No, we think it’s crap. There’s too much focus on some select sports — for example basketball.” One of the women also added that there was ‘far too much amateur commentary talking over the professional commentary,’ as well.Often people’s comments discussed the lack of variety and the interruptions in event coverage, as voiced by two more Smith's women who both said: “There’s limited event coverage.” One of the two went further and said: “It’s pretty horrible … they keep jumping between events in the middle of the competition.”Susie Grant, of Pembroke, and Cherie Dam, of Warwick, also echoed these thoughts, saying, “It’s really bad. We haven’t been watching it because there is no coverage.”“There’s just no variety or selection of the different sports that you’d want to watch,” said Ms Grant. Ms Dam also added that they keep cutting to advertisements and commentary at “the most inopportune times”.David Zuill expressed his displeasure with CableVision’s Olympic coverage offerings as well. “I think it’s lousy,” said the Smith’s taxi driver. “We’re nothing as far as they’re (CableVision) concerned.”Another man from Smith’s, said: “What coverage? I’ll leave it at that.”Describing the picture quality as “awful” and “very poor,” some residents discussed how they instead chose to get their Olympic coverage online, such as Jamie Yorke of Warwick and Jonathan Sutcliffe of Pembroke.“The picture quality is not great. I end up downloading it off the BBC (website) and watching it from there because the coverage is too limited,” said Mr Sutcliffe.Mr Yorke agreed with Mr Sutcliffe’s comments, and went even further to make his dissatisfaction known.“It’s like being in Trinidad watching the Olympics,” said Mr Yorke, who is half-Trinidadian.“I don’t particularly want to watch Bulgaria vs Italy in volleyball,” he added. “I’d rather watch something more exciting, and I haven’t seen any of the equestrian.”Jamaican native Beverly Godwin expressed her pleasure with the coverage of famous sprinter Usain Bolt, but also voiced disapproval with the overall quality of the coverage.“They keep cutting it off. I like watching the BBC channel, but on 11 they keep cutting it off and just talk, talk, talk,” said Ms Godwin.Despite overwhelming discontentment with CableVision’s coverage, two people did have positive responses.Smith’s resident Angela Bruce said: “Yes, I like [the coverage]. It’s covering what I want to see, like right now I’m very interested in the track and field and it covers that.”However, Ms Bruce did have one problem. “One thing that I didn’t like is that I didn’t think it was that clear. So that’s the only thing — it’s hard on the eye.” Otherwise, she didn’t have many complaints.A Warwick man said: “The little bit I’ve seen has been pretty good”.Jared Simmons, of Southampton, and Nakia Foggo, of St George’s, also had much criticism. Regarding the coverage, both said “it sucks”, with Mr Simmons adding that “the commentary is just garbage”.“The pictures are fuzzy and I’d rather see more running,” said Ms Foggo. The two also voiced their displeasure with the lack of coverage of the Bermudian athletes and the blocking of coverage on the other US channels.“I don’t think that’s right. We’re paying to have these channels and we can’t see them. It’s not like they’re giving us that money back for the month. We’re still paying for it and can’t watch it,” said Ms Foggo.Mr Simmons said: ‘We need better coverage. What they gave us is crap.”
