Amid the gloomy shadow of Bermuda’s struggling economy, a bright new gem of a shop is set to open in St George’s showcasing custom-made jewellery.Davidrose Jewelry, which has previous been only available online is opening a flagship boutique on Water Street in the East End.Owned by Bermudian David Zuill and his fiancee Avrel Rose Fernandes, the boutique offers “conscious” luxury jewellery incorporating diamonds, gemstones and precious metals.Focusing on handcrafted bridal and statement pieces, the company has gained a loyal following of international clientele from Canada, US and Bermuda as well as the Middle East and India. Many of their clients are repeat customers. All of Davidrose’s diamonds pass the Kimberley Process Certification, which prevents ‘conflict’ diamonds from entering the main stream and believe gemstones possess specific natural healing qualities.“Each stone has a certain energetic healing property to it that resonates through the wearer,” said Mr Zuill. “We explain to our clients when they purchase what each stone does to enhance their life.”Ms Fernandes, is a third generation jeweller from Toronto. Her family has a workshop in Toronto where all of their custom-made pieces are handcrafted. The couple, who met at York University in Toronto and formed the company in 2009, helps their clients conceptualise their ideas, design the piece, and then Mr Zuill, who has a background in computer sciences, creates a 3-D rendition of it.“It’s made to order,” said Ms Fernandes. “Based on David’s designs, we can create pieces that make our clients feel good and look good at the same time.”The St George’s boutique will feature a select sample of ready-to-wear luxury pieces as well as a bridal wall of their new platinum and silver lines. The new space will also allow the jewellers to meet in person with clients who looking for high-end custom pieces, particularly their substantial bridal clientele — both women and men. They also create jewellery for babies as well. The couple’s desire to raise a family in Bermuda is what inspired them to look for a physical retail space.“We always wanted to raise our children here and we had been looking for a space for awhile,” said Ms Fernandes, adding that they originally looked for spaces in Hamilton. But in April, the pair happened to be walking in St George’s and stumbled upon a 500-square-foot shop on Water Street with a spectacular view.“The space had the most stunning view I’d ever seen,” said Ms Fernandes. “We didn’t even have words, we just knew this was it.”The East End town held a special place in Mr Zuill’s heart because he grew up not far away in St David’s.“It’s nostalgic actually,” said Mr Zuill. “I have been in Toronto for seven years so returning and being able to set up a shop where I grew up is one of the best things that could happen, especially if you love your country and where you are from.”Though there has been a flurry of recent retail shop closings both in Hamilton and St George’s, the couple is undeterred, saying if it weren’t for some of the closures, they wouldn’t have found the perfect space.“We see this as an opportunity and feel confident it will work,” said Mr Zuill. “The water’s edge is a foot away from our front window. We’re inspired by the view and ambience.”“We’re excited to come home and open up a store not only in my home country but to do it with my fiancee,” he added. “She’s very inspirational to me and the whole reason we started the company.”The boutique will officially open at the end of November though the jewellers are still booking private consultations off site.
