Twenty-one middle school students are having a half-term break with a difference they are spending it on the Spirit of Bermuda.Ayala Doars, 13, admitted she felt “a little nervous but ready for the week and can’t wait to see what is in store for her for mid-term break”.The students are all in the third year of middle school (M3) and attend the five public middle schools.Earlier on this month each M3 year took a one-day voyage on Spirit. The majority of the students were prefects and student leaders in their schools. The principals and teachers were then asked to pick four to five students to represent their school on a five-day voyage.Lakai Dill, one of the organisers, explained that the objective of the five-day voyage is offer character education by way of sailing. Awareness, pride, resilience, self-confidence, teamwork, perseverance, courage, responsibility and accountability are the key areas the crew works on. The students set sail on Monday. On their first day they learnt safety and got acquainted with the ship. On Day Two, with the winds out of the north this week the ship headed towards the east on the north channel. On Day Three, the students went ashore for some fun before setting sail for the South Shore. Today they are headed back to the West and tomorrow they will head for Hamilton Harbour where they will be reunited with their families. The ship anchors each night at approximately 8pm. The students are split up in to teams of three. Together with a member of crew the teams rotate one and half hour watch through to 6am the next day.We asked Ayala, who attends TN Tatem, what she had learnt from the last voyage. She said: “How to work together and that there is no I in team.”Ayala agreed to write a journal of this voyage, which will be published in future editions of Young Observer.
