Amend rent control legislation

October 29, 2012Dear Sir,I wish to suggest that the Government of the day consider amending the Rent Control Act to reflect the current times/way of life here in Bermuda.Currently the Rent Control Act, is biased in favour of the tenant! There are 10-16 year old children who, when they realise the law enables them, threaten their parents that if they touch them, then the Police will be called! These are children. Now consider a grown adult with the same understanding, that the Rent Control Act gives them greater control over the property than the owner/landlord?The current Rent Control Act perpetuates the disrespectful behaviour of these bad tenants.I am a property owner and I personally know quite a few property owners who will not rent their apartments to their fellow Bermudians. This is a truly sad state of affairs when Bermudians won’t rent to Bermudians under the current Rent Control Act. You cannot really blame them. I suggest the Government reform the Rent Control Act, making it more evenly weighted, or, give the property owner the greater benefit of the doubt. This change may encourage property owners to consider making their premises available to Bermudians. This may be a viable solution to the current housing crisis!Have a blessed, safe Halloween, Bermuda!SON OF BERMUDAHamilton Parish
