Progressive Labour Party green met One Bermuda Alliance red outside of the Seventh-day Adventist Church on King Street yesterday as part of the official nomination day. Before nominations could begin, independent candidates Kim Swan, David Petty and Kingsley Francis were already waiting. They were followed by almost all of the OBA’s field of candidates, who arrived in number before nominations began, each wearing an article of OBA red.Leading the group, party leader Craig Cannonier walked up to the church arm-in-arm with retiring MP Louise Jackson. When the doors opened at 11am, Mr Swan and Mr Francis were the first inside. Mr Swan said Mr Francis was the first to be nominated, saying: “He beat me through the door. I thought it was fitting as he has run in so many elections as an independent candidate that he go first.”As the OBA members began to trickle out of the church minutes later, the PLP candidates arrived at the venue, marching down King Street wielding placards.Randy Horton, however, skipped both the march and the green. The veteran MP, who underwent knee surgery earlier this year and is walking with a cane, arrived wearing a pink shirt and tie.Premier Paula Cox, wearing a bright green dress, narrowly avoided being part of an OBA group photograph after she emerged from the church hall mid-picture.Several candidates praised the new nomination system, in which all candidates registered at a single location.Dale Butler said: “I was in and out in about three minutes. I think it’s been tremendously well organised.”Candidates for both parties were all registered within the first hour, with only a handful of independent candidates arriving to register in the second hour.LeYoni Junos, an independent candidate running in Pembroke South East, arrived just minutes before registration ended at 1pm.By the end of the day, a total of 87 candidates had been nominated — including two candidates running in Warwick named David Burch. While Lt Col David Arnold Burch, a former Senator and member of cabinet, was rolled out as the PLP candidate for Warwick North Central several months ago, it was revealed yesterday that David William Burch will be running in Warwick South East as an independent candidate.
