Olympic boxer Clarence Hill was yesterday given a 12-month conditional discharge for stealing a copy of The Royal Gazette.The 61-year-old pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to theft but said the incident was the result of a misunderstanding.The court heard that Hill went to C Mart on North Shore in Pembroke and picked up two newspapers.He returned one copy and asked the clerk for change, before leaving the store with the second newspaper in the waistband of his pants.The entire incident was caught on CCTV camera.Hill said he had placed a dollar on the counter which he assumed the clerk took for the paper. He further told the court that he had already apologised and reimbursed the store for the $1 newspaper.Hill made history at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games when he won the bronze medal in heavyweight boxing — the only Olympic medal ever won by a Bermudian athlete.He made headlines last year when Government announced in the Throne Speech that it intended to erect a bronze statue in his honour. Hill said the money would be better invested in the creation of a state-of-the-art boxing gym.
