Bermuda will be without the services of one the team’s most experienced strike bowlers during this month’s World Cricket League (WCL) Division 3 tournament, The Royal Gazette can reveal.Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) Chief Executive Neil Speight yesterday confirmed that fast bowler Stefan Kelly is unavailable to play in the upcoming round robin tournament to be held on local shores.“I can confirm that Stefan Kelly has made himself unavailable for WCL 3,” Speight said.It remains unclear why Kelly, who could not be reached for comment yesterday, has made himself unavailable.However, reliable sources have suggested that the player might have been ruled out because of school commitments overseas in the United Kingdom.Former Bermuda skipper and national team selector Clay Smith believes Kelly’s unavailability is a major blow to the senior national team.“That is a massive loss as Stefan is one of the more experienced bowlers in the team and would have made a massive impact,” he said.The St David’s cricketer was named in a training squad of 43 players to try out for a place on Bermuda’s WCL squad in September of last year.Kelly did not take part in the senior national team’s training camp in Barbados in February nor last month’s ICC Americas Division 1 T20 tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.Meanwhile, Speight said Bermuda’s WCL squad will be released next week.“We have been told by the ICC that they plan to release the squads on April 16,” he said.Bermuda will host the WCL Division 3 tournament between April 28 and May 5 with all matches taking place at the National Sports Centre (NSC), Lords and Somerset Cricket Club.The tournament will involve Uganda, Oman, Nepal, Italy, USA and hosts Bermuda.The eventual top two teams will gain promotion to WCL Division 2 and remain on course to secure ODI status, a spot in the ICC High Performance Program and qualification to the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup.The third and fourth placed teams will remain in the WCL Division 3 while the bottom two will be relegated to the WCL Division 4.After appearing at the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean, Bermuda lost their ODI status and High Performance Program privileges after being relegated to the WCL Division 2 after finishing ninth at World Cup qualifiers in South Africa in 2009.The Island then slipped further down the ICC Associate ladder after being relegated to the WCL Division 3 after placing sixth at the WCL Division 2 tournament in UAE in 2011.
