Nelson Mandela's 95th birthday was celebrated by dozens at the Wesley Methodist Church yesterday in Hamilton.Former South Africa President Mandela, who has been critically ill, was celebrated by songs of peace, history and poetry were sung during the event. The event was jointly hosted by Glen Fubler, of Imagine Bermuda, and Gene Steede.Premier Craig Cannonier, Governor George Fergusson and other dignitaries along with members of the public were welcomed at the church by African drumming beats.“I thoroughly enjoyed the tribute to Nelson Mandela's 95th birthday celebration which was held this afternoon at the Wesley Methodist Church,” Premier Cannonier told The Royal Gazette.“I was truly inspired by the reading of Mr Mandela's letters to his wife, “Winnie” while he was incarcerated. In the midst of decades of being behind bars, he found a benefit, which is just incredible. When most people would be writing about being imprisoned, he wrote about the opportunity for self-discovery — he is truly an optimist — truly inspirational!”The audience all stood together for the South African National Anthem, followed by introductory comments by the hosts and several hymns.During Ed Christopher's performance of Stevie Wonder's “Happy Birthday”, the entire gathering stood up, sang and clapped along.Other performers included Deidre-Lee Bean and Gavin Smith of Chewstick.Mr Steede also sang and shared his thoughts on Mr Mandela.“Nelson Mandela is a very important man to us, and every move that he makes, we know what he is doing and he is valuable person to not only South Africa, but to Bermuda and the world,” he said. “Whatever we can do get his message out there, is what we try to do.”The event concluded with Warwick Gombey Dancers entertaining the crowd outside the church building.
