Pace bowler Kelly to miss Cup Match

Stefan Kelly: Unavailable for Cup Match.

Fast bowler Stefan Kelly won’t play in Cup Match this year, forcing challengers St George’s to look elsewhere for another strike bowler.“Stefan is unavailable,” St George’s chairman of selectors Charlie Marshall confirmed. “He wrote to the club stating he was unavailable to play this year because he has other important obligations.”Kelly’s unavailability has paved the way for others to stake their claim.“We have other bowlers who are training extremely hard that can fill Stefan Kelly’s shoes,” added Marshall. “We have some great bowlers down in St George’s that are training very hard and bowling consistently well in training and the trial matches who I am confident will do a great job.”Earlier this year Kelly also made himself unavailable to represent Bermuda at the Pepsi ICC World Cricket League Division 3 championships held on local soil. The fast bowler’s absence means that St George’s will have to make at least three changes to their squad from the one that suffered a humiliating ten-wicket defeat against rivals Somerset last year.Skipper Oronde Bascome, who missed last year’s match through injury, has returned while veteran batsman Glenn Blakeney hasn’t played all season because of health issues. The challengers are due to announce their squads for Saturday’s final Cup Match trial at Wellington Oval today.Following Saturday’s match, St George’s’ selection committee will begin what Marshall predicts will be a long process of choosing the right nucleus of players capable of dethroning the champions.“I honestly think it’s going to be longer meeting than it was last year, let’s put it that way,” he said. “It’s going to be a long, healthy meeting because I have a lot of knowledge around the table, and so far we’ve been picking each other’s brains over what direction we want to go.”Marshall is confident St George’s can reclaim the coveted cup this year on home turf, a feat they achieved during a controversial and heated affair at the same venue in 2005.“I am confident if the guys perform at least 20 percent better than they did last year I will be very, very happy, and I’m quite sure the St George’s community will be very, very happy,” he said.Marshall feels that complacency led to the East Enders’ demise in Somerset last year more than anything else.“The reason why St George’s lost the cup is because they were complacent,” he said. “They felt everything was going to be so easy and just another Cup Match game, and Somerset jumped on them and continued to put pressure on them from the first ball to the last.“St George’s were their own worst enemies because they were very complacent, and negative results occur when you become complacent.”Marshall, who holds multiple Cup Match records, predicts that this year’s Cup Match will be one for the ages.“This is going to be an excellent Cup Match to watch,” he said. “I’m encouraging the whole community and those who haven’t witnessed Cup Match for the past several years to come out because it’s going to be a very exciting game.”
